Olivia Millerschin on How Her Songwriting has Led to Incredible Experiences

April 15, 2019

Olivia Millerschin is still at the start of her career, but if you looked at her long list of credits and accomplishments, you'd think she'd already been at it for decades.

The 23-year-old singer/songwriter, who hails from metro Detroit, is a two-time John Lennon Songwriting Award winner, which allowed her to be featured on the mainstage at NAMM 2018. She's also won the Great American Song Contest, made it to the quarter finales on America's Got Talentand even lent her voice to the 2018 Olympics' Ice Dancing competition.

Along with all of that, Millerschin has written songs for TV and movies, including some of Mitch Albom's projects, released two full-length albums, and tours regularly across the country with her band.

Recently stopping by the MusicTown Detroit studios for an interview and live performance on Behind the Mic with Pam Rossi, Millerschin discussed how her songwriting has led to such amazing experiences.

"It was kind of luck more than anything," she told host Pam Rossi. "I was contacted by a movie a couple of years ago and they asked if they could use a song I already wrote, and that was when I started opening by eyes a little bit to the possibilities of people not only using the current soundtrack that I already have, but also me writing songs tailored for that sort of thing."

"It's an honor, too, to put somebody else's words, somebody else's message to music," she continued. "It's something that's challenging, but it's also like a fun puzzle for me."

In fact, even the songs that Millerschin performed on Behind the Mic had great stories behind them. One is set to be used as the theme to the new TV show Brick Story, and her song "Cactus on a Ledge" inspired her to write and publish a children's book.
